The main goal of the realized project was expansion process of the high efficiency and low emission combustion technology, developed previously by the ICS Company, namely Zonal Volumetric Combustion (ZVC). This will allow to use of renewable energy sources, and maximizing acquire / use of energy from the waste derived fuels (off-gases, waste gases) instead of energy drawing from the so-called fossil fuels, whose resources are already clearly limited. One of the main areas of application of proposed technology are high-performance intelligent distributed power generation systems, processing plants of selected industrial waste, in particular plastics as well as the incineration systems of industrial waste gases.

The issue of increasing of renewable energy sources in energy production as well as the limitation of emission of toxic compounds and pollution is currently one of the major problem which have to be solved in energy sector. The very promising solution is introduction to the energy market a high efficient and low emission small scale electricity generating plants fired by municipal waste or industrial off-gases.

The main research goal of the carried investigations was to develop of low emission combustion system fired by gaseous and liquid fuels like:

  • syngases from low-, medium- and high-temperature gasification process of biomass, ,
  • gases from gasification process of selected municipal waste,
  • waste gases from the process of plastics processing on liquid or gaseous fuel,
  • off-gases from industrial processes containing higher hydrocarbons (C6 +, with particular emphasis on aromatic hydrocarbons) and compounds types like CXHYNZ, NXHY, CXHYSZ or HXSY,

The received results shown that the ZVC technology can work properly also for the combustion systems with relatively high coefficient of air excess ratio (O2 > 10% in dry FG) without introduction of external flue gas recirculation (EGR) solutions.

In Addition, it is assumed That this system will be able to operate without the need to:

  • use of the secondary method for reduction of nitric oxides eg. Selective Non-Catalitic Reduction (SNCR) or others, for a wide range of syngas fuels containing chemical compounds like CXHYNZ, NXHY, which have the highest impact on the formation of fuel NOx during combustion processes,
  • use of the secondary technology for high hydrocarbons (CXHY) incineration process. It allows to reduce the emission of carcinogenic as well as odorous compounds to the atmosphere without specialized, expensive catalytic reduction systems.

The main effect of the project was to improve, previously developed Zonal Volumetric Combustion technology. As a result of research the ZVC technology become ready to apply for a wide range of low, medium and high-calorific fuels containing high hydrocarbons, sulfur compounds as well nitrogen bounded compounds. Furthermore, it is possible to carry out the combustion process using a newly developed injector’s supply system (in case of very low fuel pressure), without impact on the quality of the combustion process in particular on the emission of toxic compounds. The results of investigation shows that modified ZVC technology is characterized by very low emission of fuel nitric oxides for a wide range of studied fuels in comparison to the currently available technologies. The conversion factor (CF) Which describes the amount of molecular compounds containing nitrogen converted into nitric oxide for the developed ZVC technology takes value of a few percent lower (for examined fuels) than cited in the literature for existing industrial technology.

An additional very important effect of the project is also develop of a new computational model that allows to use a numerical analysis (CFD) for combustion process in modified ZVC technology during designing process of new plants without implementation of expensive and time-consuming experiments .
